The digital home administration
In my daily job as consultant I'm doing a lot of ECM projects at the bigger companies in the world. Challenges change everywhere, but one of the things that I copied to my daily life is the keeping of a digital administration: receipts, paycheck, tax papers and more are effectively scanned, stored on my PC and backed up every now and then. So no dusty shelves with (useless?) piles of paper and a lot of work keeping it all organized.... and today i read this news on the Dutch news website nu.nl: Kassabonnen niet meer bewaren.
To explain: the Dutch tax agency will allow you to keep digital scanned receipts as alternative to paper ones.
This is a great development and a nice outlook for things to come. Currently, some banks are thinking about offering the same for their monthly receipts, and I'm waiting for the day where my creditcard has an email address attached, so that receipts for any purchase is send to my PC and I can just store it by dragging it in the right folder....

What is Information Management?
A colleague of mine triggered a question this week... He mailed me asking what Information Management really is, for I have MSc degree in Information Management. Of course I can explain what it is, but apparantly there are many different views on this. Let's share two views:
1 - Wikipedia
Information management (IM) is the collection and management of information from one or more sources and the distribution of that information to one or more audiences. This sometimes involves those who have a stake in, or a right to that information. Management means the organization of and control over the structure, processing and delivery of information.
2 - Queensland Information Planning
Information Management describes the means by which an organisation efficiently plans, collects, organises, uses, controls, disseminates and disposes of its information, and through which it ensures that the value of that information is identified and exploited to the fullest extent.
Obviously, managing information is a part of information management and not the same. For those interested in the Enterprise Content Management Area, you might notice that the second definition has large similarities with Enterprise Content Management definitions. So what Information Management is, will likely differ if the perspective on what information is differs.
